Upon inspecting once again the /etc/mysql/my.cnf file, I saw some directories worth looking at: datadir = /var/lib/mysql tmpdir = /tmp lc-messages-dir = /usr/share/mysql And that was it, the /var/lib/mysql directory had root as Mysql Stop Unknown Instance Why are Zygote and Whatsapp asking for root? I had to reboot the server, and mysql didnt load.
I then tried to restart mysql server using service mysql start service mysql restart /etc/init.d/mysql start But,the start process failed in all 3 cases. /var/log/mysql/mysql.log and /var/log/mysql/mysql.err files are empty.
